After disabling root user from the directory utility program, I returned to the main screen and all other user accounts were no longer showing on start-up as they were before enabling root user. Help. Please.

I enabled "root" user. It was an attempt (out of concern of granddaughter's age) to check on her history since I am the administrator. Realizing that this method was way more complicated than what I am capable of handling, I went back in to the Directory Utility Program and disabled the "root" user. I figured all was ok as I had not done anything while logged in as the "root" user. Instead, on restart of the computer, all users including myself were no longer showing on the startup. The only item showing was a blank place for user name and password. No picture. No guest. No users. How do I get those back and did I do something to cause this?

Did you do anything else while logged in as root?

Enabling and then disabling root should not have caused that.

Also, having root enabled is one of the ways that you get a login screen showing only name and password.

You should be able to type in your user name and password to log in.

Once logged in, check Users & Groups system prefs, Login Options and make sure it is set to list users. You'll have to click the padlock at the bottom to make changes.

Thanks Barney for your quick response to my question. You're right, I just needed to go back into Users & Groups Sys Pref, Login options and set it back to 'list users'. That took care of it. I really was just wanting to make sure my granddaughter wasn't into any kind of trouble on the Internet. I had that gnawing feeling. Luckily she left everything open while she was gone and I was able to check her history. Big relief. Just wish there was an easier way than to have to rely on "luck". Thanks again.
